Abstract

911,816. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 24, 1959 [April 29, 1958], No. 14149/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (4). In an automatic telephone system metering information in respect of calls made by the subscribers of each exchange is stored in the exchange concerned and is subsequently transferred in bulk to a central store, the information in this central store being used to assess the charges for all the subscribers. At each exchange one core of a ferrite core matrix is allocated to each subscriber, which core is triggered by the occurrence of a metering pulse on the corresponding subscriber's metering lead. The cores are continuously scanned under control of a pulse-controlled scanner and the identity of lines metered are transferred, one at a time, to a temporary store. A magnetic drum having a track for each subscriber in the system is situated at the central exchange and in respect of the lines of that exchange the total of unit calls recorded in respect of a subscriber is transferred from the drum to an adder each time that subscriber is metered. One is added to this number and the new total is reinserted on the drum. In the case of subscribers of the other exchanges, the identity of a metered subscriber is recorded on a magnetic tape or the like in the exchange concerned. Subsequently, at some convenient time, the information on these tapes is offered to the central exchange equipment in like manner to that in respect of central exchange subscribers and the totals recorded on the drum are altered accordingly.
