Abstract

Nylon monofilaments having a diameter of 3 to 30 mils.; a tensile strength, bearing a linear relationship to the diameter, of at least 110,000 p.s.i. for a diameter of 3 mils. and at least 73,000 p.s.i. for a diameter of 30 mils.; and a beam stiffness of 150,000 to 230,000 p.s.i. over a diameter range of 3 to 30 mils., the beam stiffness bearing a linear relationship to the diameter, are produced by melt spinning a polyamide through a one-orifice spinneret into a liquid quenching bath and drawing the monofilament thus formed at a draw ratio of between 4,8:1 and 5,6:1, whereby its overhand knot strength is increased by at least 18%, the diameter of the spinneret orifice being such that, after drawing, the diameter of the filament is 3 to 30 mils. The filament is preferably drawn in two steps, first at a draw ratio between 4,2:1 and 4,5:1 (preferably 4,3:1) at about 30 DEG -55 DEG C. in a liquid (such as water or trichloroethylene) which will neither attack the filament chemically nor swell or dissolve it, and then at a draw ratio of between 1,15:1 and 1,25:1, preferably 1,2:1, in an oil such as a silicone oil, or a polyalkylene glycol oil at 150 DEG to 165 DEG C. "Beam stiffness" is determined by attaching a weight of W grams to the centre of a filament of diameter D suspended between two supports spaced one inch apart and measuring the resulting deflection d after 30 seconds, the measurement being made in air at 23 DEG C. and 50% relative humidity. The beam stiffness is calculated according to the formula B.S. in p.s.i.=0,00237 W/D4d.
