Abstract

911,417. Rollers; calenders; ironing-machines. SCHMITZ, W. E. Jan. 18, 1961 [Jan. 19, 1960], No. 2100/61. Classes 42 (1), 42 (2) and 138 (2). [Also in Group XXXII] A resilient surface for rollers &c. of ironing &c. machines, comprises, mounted on a support, a plurality of resilient tongues, lamallse or plates each having an upstanding portion and an upper surface at an angle to the upstanding portion and substantially parallel to the rigid support, the upper surfaces being arranged to overlap in the manner of scales and a recess or step being formed at the junction of the upstanding portion and the upper surface of a tongue, to accommodate the end of an adjacent tongue and thereby to form a smooth substantially continuous surface. As shown, such a surface comprises any number of cranked springy tongues 1 on a steel, non-ferrous metal or plastic strip 2. Head parts 13 of the tongues are shaped so that they overlap adjoining tongues in the manner of scales so as to form a closed springy surface. In order to obtain precise location turned-up edges 15 may be provided on the foot parts 12 to serve as limiting stops. Tongues 1 may be attached to the strip 2 by bending the edges of strip 2 over the foot parts 12 or by spot welding &c. Air apertures 16 and 23 may be provided for exhaustion through the surface and prongs 131 on head parts 13 assist in holding a textile covering to the surface. In use the surface can be wound spirally around a roller or formed into plates by connecting a plurality of them transversely. It can be used for processing textiles, paper, leather or plastic and further it is possible by using a stronger or weaker shaping of the tongues to press patterns into material to be treated.
