Abstract

911,285. Rib attaching. SMALL, E. F. Feb. 26, 1959 [Feb. 27, 1958], No. 6789/59. Class 17 (1). A rib-attaching machine comprises a support 14 for a major face of an insole, an edge guide member or members 68, 70, guide means 18 for guiding the rib on to the other major face of the insole and means 20 for pressing the rib on to the insole and advancing the insole against the support 14 and edge guide 68, 70 to progressively lay the rib, the pressing and advancing means comprising a pair of feed feet for engaging the rib and means for moving the feet cyclically in out-of-phase relation with a cycle comprising a component of motion normal to support 14 and an arcuate movement about an axis normal to support 14. The machine possesses a head casting 12 in which a shaft 24 is slidably and rotatably mounted, the shaft carrying a sleeve 26 and integral arm 30. The distal end of arm 30 carries a sleeve in which the support 14 and associated edge guides 68, 70 are spring- mounted on a shaft 40. Lock-nuts 46 threaded on shaft 40 allow the compression of spring mounting 44 to be varied. On the other end of shaft 24 an arm 54 carrying an eccentric cam surface 62 is journalled. Cam face 62 abuts casting 12 so that when arm 54 is moved in the plane of the machine, as shown in Fig. 1, the support is moved towards or away from the feeding mechanism. If arm 54 is moved in a plane perpendicular to that of Fig. 1, support 14 and edge guides 68, 70 move relatively to rib guide 18, thus allowing the rib to be applied to any part of the face of the insole. The pressing and feeding means 20 are mounted on concentric sliding cylinders 74, 76, collars 94 and 98 of which carry ball-bearing assemblies 100. A rotatable shaft 102 carries eccentrics 104, 106 which co-operate with assemblies 100 so that, when shaft 102 is rotated by motor M1, the cylinders 74, 76 move in out-ofphase relationship along their common axis and angularly with respect to each other. These movements press the rib against the support and advance the insole. Rib guide 18 is pivotably mounted on one end of a bell-crank lever 138, the other end of which abuts a spring-loaded shaft 150 and cutter 157. The construction of the rib guide is such that on its movement away from the working region the rib slides freely in the guide whereas in its movement towards the working region the rib is clamped in the guide. Movement of handle 54 to the position shown in Fig. 1 trips a switch S1 which starts motor M1 and thus initiates a cycle of operation. The movement of handle 54 back to its rest position trips switch S2 through links 174, 172, 168 to initiate the movement of guide 18 away from the working region. This movement effects the depression of shaft 150 and cutter 157 by lever 138, thus bringing the cutter into engagement with the rib to sever it.
