911,222. Printing surfaces. GRAY, A. H. June 20, 1960 [June 23, 1959], No. 21569/59. Class 100 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A method of producing a printing plate comprises placing a synthetic plastic sheet, used to form part of the plate, on a matrix which has been treated with a release agent, superimposing on the sheet a synthetic rubber base, applying pressure to the assembly in a heated press at 150-160‹ C. whereby the plate is moulded and the parts thereof are bonded together, and subsequently cooling the plate in a cooling press at approximately 40‹ C. The plastic sheet may be a copolymer of polyvinyl chloride of a thickness between 0.030 inch and 0.015 inch and the synthetic rubber base may be uncured nitrile rubber of such a thickness as to bring the finished plate to a thickness of between 0.080 inch and 0.100 inch. A cotton or linen control cloth may be inserted between the plastic sheet and rubber base to prevent shrinkage. The assembly is placed in the heated press and the platens of the press are placed in contact with the assembly for 1¢ minutes before the application of pressure so as to soften the plastic sheet. The pressure applied is in the region of 600-1120 1b. per square inch and lasts for ten minutes. The finished plate, being flexible, may be used on a cylinder or on a platen. The matrix used is of " Bakelite " (Registered Trade Mark) and according to the Provisional Specification the release agent may consist of graphite in spirit.
