Abstract
911,131. Automatic speed and acceleration control. FERRANTI Ltd. Nov. 9, 1960 [Nov. 13, 1959], No. 38508/59. Class 38 (4). The work-table 10 of a machine tool is driven to the right at a steady velocity in response to a control signal applied over line 32 to a device 31 which compares the control signal with one provided by pick-off 23 and affords an error signal over line .34. Short-range hydraulic actuators A, B, C are adapted to operate cyclically in sequence to drive the table. When the piston of actuator C closes switch RC, relay XB/4 is energized so that the error signal on line 34 is applied to valve 15B, thereby starting piston 13B on its rightward movement. The output from comparator 24B is also applied to valve 15B to afford an additional control voltage, proportional to the difference between the velocities of the table and the piston, which acts as a starting boost to the piston. The movement of the piston operates switch PB-SB in turn, and when the piston has reached the speed demanded by the error signal, clutch 16B is engaged by switch QB so that actuator B shares the load with actuator C. When piston 13B reaches and closes contacts RB it energizes relay XA/4 to start actuator A by applying the error signal to valve 15A. Actuation of switch SB de-energizes relay XB/4 to remove the error signal from valve 15B and to disengage the clutch 16B. The idle piston 13B is then restored to its rest position, relay YB/3 being energized so that a return signal is applied to valve 15B from terminal 35. In a modification, the table is driven in either direction by an error signal which varies in sense, each actuator being provided with a further group of switches, similar to the group PB-SB, which are operated sequentially as the piston makes an active stroke in the opposite direction, Fig. 6 (not shown). A changeover switch responsive to the sense of the error signal connects the relays to the group appropriate to that sense. In some cases, an oncoming actuator may receive a starting signal before its idle piston has been transferred to its rest position from its previous active stroke, so causing the piston to lose station over the subsequent cycles of operation. To prevent such misoperation, a supplementary starting boost is provided under these circumstances. Where the control signal represents the required position or acceleration of the table rather than its velocity, the pick-off 23 is replaced by a device responsive to the quantity controlled.
