Abstract
910,974. Stabilizing soil. ALCO CHEMICAL CORPORATION. May 23, 1960, No. 18073/60. Class 68 (1). Soil is stabilized by applying to the surface a composition consisting of a latex of natural rubber or a synthetic elastomer, and a " counter penetrant " consisting of a natural gum, methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl ether of cellulose, an alkali metal salt of carboxy methyl cellulose, a poly-acrylate or poly-acrylamide. The " counter-penetrant " is absorbed by the soil rendering the latex unstable from which the elastomer separates and binds the soil particles. Pigments may be added to render the soil heat-absorbent or repellent, e.g. carbon black, or oxides of Pb, Sn, W, Ba to resistant atomic radiation effects. Fillers, e.g. clays or whiting may also be added together with antioxidants. The synthetic elastomers used instead of carbon latex include a range of polymers and copolymers including butadiene/styrene, vinyl acetate/acrylates, benzyl- and halogenated styrenes, poly-vinyl ethers and acrylonitriles, butyl rubber, and silicone rubbers. The composition preferably contains 2 to 4% of the elastomer, up to 0.5% of " counter-penetrant," and is applied at the rate of 0.25 to 5 ozs. of (dry) elastomers per square yard of surface.
