[Also in Group XXVIII] In a tank for storing liquid oxygen or other gases having an outer shell 10, Fig. 1, and an inner shell 11, a lining for the inner shell comprises one or a number of layers of a foil of a ductile metal, preferably lead, bonded on each side to plastics layers, preferably of polyethylene terephthalate. The shell 11 is surrounded by a layer 12 of insulating material, preferably foamed polystyrene the cells of which contain a vapour or gas, such as CO 2 or watervapour, which condenses to give a very low vapour pressure at the temperature of the tank contents. In a modification, a metal inner shell 35, Fig. 8, has an insulating jacket comprising a single or double layer of sections 36, each of which comprises a light-alloy trough 37 fitted with. foamed polystyrene 38 and closed by a lead foil/plastics laminate 39 the edges of which are turned over with those of the trough as at 40.
