Abstract

910,902. Nuclear fuel elements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 2, 1960 [Dec. 8, 1959], No. 41749/59. Class 39 (4). A structure for supporting a nuclear fuel, element within a graphite sleeve 9 comprises four identically-shaped members, each formed from strip metal, e.g. zirconium, and having a body portion 1 and two spacer portions 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, each spacer portion 2 being secured to a spacer portion 2<SP>1</SP> of a neighbouring strip member and engaging a positioning slot 10 in the sleeve 9, and a fixation member 13 of cruciform shape, the four arms 14 of which each project through a slot in one of the body portions 1 of the strip members. A hole 15 in the fixation member 13 enables the member to be affixed to a fuel element by means of a fixing collar on a stem projecting from the base of the fuel element down through the hole 15. In order to prevent rotation of the fuel element within the support, a serrated locking ring 11 is provided which engages splines on the fuel element can. The spacer portions 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are secured together by welding to I-section pieces 5 and T-section pieces 6 so as to provide locating slots 7, 8 to engage cut-away portions on each of four swirler vanes attached to the fuel element can. In a modified construction (Fig. 4), the strip members are more simply shaped in respect of the body portions 21 and the locking ring 22, serrated as before, is of circular section, being keyed to the support by means of cutaway slots engaging each arm of the fixation member 23. Each of these arms also projects through slots in two adjoining strip members, as shown. The adjacent arms of the strip members are spaced from each other by square spacer plates 24 and further rigidity is obtained by spot-welding the arms together at points 26, one of each pair of arms being dimpled at such a point. The ends of the strip members are curved back as shown at 27 so as to provide larger bearing surfaces on the seatings in the graphite sleeve.
