Abstract

Rubber articles such as tyres, hose, belts and gaskets are reinforced by polypyrrolidone elements, especially monofilaments, yarns, cords and fabrics of oriented, melt-extruded polypyrrolidone. The polypyrrolidone is made by the alkali-catalysed polymerization of pure pyrrolidone or an alkali metal salt thereof under anhydrous conditions in the presence of an activator such as acetyl pyrrolidone, adipoyl dipyrrolidone, acetyl chloride, phenyl isocyanate, phenylcarbamyl pyrrolidone or stearoyl pyrrolidone, and is preferably treated with a lower aliphatic acid aqueous solution to remove low mol. wt. polymers and remaining alkali. Greater adhesion to rubber is attained by preliminary treatment of the polypyrrolidone elements with a primer, e.g. a solution of ABR or of ABR with resorcinol-formaldehyde resin or a polyvinylpyridine latex with resorcinol-formaldehyde resin.
