Abstract
Polyethylene terephthalate materials, especially films and fabrics, are treated either with an aqueous solution made from trichloracetic acid and chromium trioxide or an equivalent thereof, or alternatively with a solution containing together trichloracetic acid and a water-soluble chromic salt in an organic solvent containing sufficient water to ensure solution of the chromic salt. Chromium trioxide equivalents include chromic acid, alkali metal chromates and alkali metal dichromates. The specified aqueous solution preferably contains only water as solvent, together with a surfaceactive agent, e.g. an alcohol sulphonate. In a modification of the process using an aqueous solution, the material may be treated, instead of with a single solution, successively, in either order, with an aqueous solution of trichloracetic acid and an aqueous solution made from chromium trioxide or an equivalent thereof. An intermediate drying step may be used between the two aqueous bath treatments. When an organic solvent is used, this may consist of an aromatic hydrocarbon, water in the quantity specified and sufficient alcohol to produce a single phase. Such a solution may be made by adding an aqueous-alcoholic solution of chromium trioxide to trichloracetic acid in solution in an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. toluene. Material treated by either process may be dried at an elevated temperature. Treatment enhances the adhesion of the material for materials of other high molecular synthetic or high molecular natural substances, e.g. gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl butyral, polyethylene and polyamides.
