Abstract

910,222. Metal complexes of monoazo dyes containing hydroxy-alkylsulphonyl groups. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 15, 1960 [July 13, 1959], No. 23943/59. Addition to 854,962. Class 2(4). The invention comprises dyes which, in the free acid form, are of formula:- where A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>11</SP> are arylene residues, B<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>11</SP> are residues of coupling components which couple in the adjacent position to D<SP>1</SP> and D<SP>11</SP>, Z<SP>1</SP> and Z<SP>11</SP> are O or COO, D<SP>1</SP> and D<SP>11</SP> are O, NH or N alkyl, M is Co or Cr, X is Hlg and m is 1-4 provided that the sulphonyl residue is attached directly to a carbon atom in A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>11</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> or B<SP>11</SP> and that these residues are free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups. The dyes are made by conventional metallisation processes, the metal-free dyes also being made by usual processes, e.g. as in the parent Specification. Z<SP>1</SP> may be derived from an o-alkoxy dye. Representative of values specified for A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>11</SP> are phenylene and naphthylene. Representative of substituents indicated for diazo and coupling components are methyl, methoxy, bromine, nitro, ethylsulphonyl, benzoylamino, carboethoxyamino, sulphamyl, N,N-dimethylsulphamyl and N-benzoylsulphamyl. B<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>11</SP> are preferably of the phenol, naphthol, acetoacetarylide or 5- pyrazolone series. X is specified as Cl and Br. In preferred products A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>11</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>11</SP>, Z<SP>1</SP> and Z<SP>11</SP> and D<SP>1</SP> and D<SP>11</SP> are the same and m is especially 2 or 4 and D<SP>1</SP> and D<SP>11</SP> are O. The dyes colour nitrogen-containing fibres, e.g. wool, silk, polyamide and polyurethane, from neutral to slightly acid aqueous dyebaths. Insoluble or slightly soluble dyes are used in a dispersed form. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring wool in a variety of colours.
