Abstract

A self centring mechanism which is used in an apparatus for the but-welding of plastics material pipes has a movable pipe clamp (14) and a fixed pipe clamp (12) with a clamping block (16) intermediate the two and supporting a heater block. The mechanism has a rack and pinion or screw drive coupling the clamps and clamping block such that movement of the moving clamp (14) towards and away from the fixed clamp (12) also moves the clamping block (16) towards and away from the fixed clamp at a speed proportional to the speed of the moving clamp such that the ends of the pipes secured by the two clamps contact the heater plate on the clamping block at the same time. This improves the integrity of the resulting pipe joint. <IMAGE>
