Strip with spaced notches punched therein is wound so that the notches together form radial or obliquie slots in the wound coil, the position of the punching means being fixed and the coil, as it is wound, being moved away from the punching means so that the spacing between the notches increases with increase in diameter of the wound coil. Iron strip 85 is secured at one end to a mandrel 37 journalled in a slide 34 in a slideway 31. The mandrel 37 is rotated in steps, to wind the strip thereon, by a ratchet 39 and pawl 40, the pawl 40 being carried by an arm 42 rocked about the axis of the mandrel 37 by a link 47 connected to an adjustable crank-pin 52 on a disc 50 rotated by bevel gears 55, 56. The gear 56 is mounted on a splined shaft 58 rotated by a sleeve 60 driven from a shaft 63. Slots 86 are punched in the strip 85, when it is stationary, by a punch 26 on a yoke 22 reciprocated vertically through rods 13 and yoke 14, by a pin 18 eccentric on a shaft (not shown) driven, through a chain 65, from the shaft 63. A guide rail 71 of adjustable inclination is engaged by the periphery of the coil as it is wound on the mandrel 37 and, as the diameter of the wound coil increases, engagement of the coil with the guide 71 pushes the mandrel 37 and slide 34 down the slideway 31 against the action of a weighted rope 68, thus increasing the spacing of the punched notches.
