Abstract

909,829. Sliding clasp fasteners. PLATE, K., and WAHL, N. A., [trading as PATENTGESELLSCHAFT PLATE & CO.]. Nov. 14, 1958 [Nov. 25, 1957], No. 36732/58. Class 44. A method of constructing a coil type sliding clasp fastener, the rows of coils 11 constituting the elements of which are each fixed to stronger tapes 10 by means of a backing member 17 and in which each coil is fixed to its backing member by strand material 18 the backing member being formed from individual threads consisting of textile fibres and/or thermoplastic material, comprises the step of attaching a long length of backing member material to a long length of coil material by the strand material, the step of interlocking two such sets of coil material, backing material and strand material to form an assembly and the step of connecting together the backing material and strand material of each set over the entire length thereof or at spaced intervals corresponding approximately to the desired row lengths, by impregnation by means of adhesives, starch or thermoplastic material if the threads consist of textile fibres, or, by melting if the threads include thermoplastic material, to prevent unravelling of the threads of the backing material. The assembly is cut into sections of the desired lengths in a known manner and the sections are sewn or welded to long lengths of stringer-tape forming material with spacings between. The backing member material is attached to its coil material by winding the strand material between the loops of the coil material and around the backing member material in a conventional winding machine. When the backing material and strand material of each set are connected by adhesive they are passed through a bath containing the adhesive, starch or a thermoplastic material. The adhesive, starch or thermoplastic material can if desired be washed out by means of suitable solvents after the sections are connected to stringer tape material. When the sets of material are connected by melting threads of thermoplastic material, the sets are passed through a machine having a heated reciprocating iron element which engage the sets at spaced intervals to melt the thermoplastic material. When desired an additional cord can be secured to the backing material to protect the backing material from wear and to prevent wobbling of the slider.
