909,678. Control of D.C. motors. GRAH, H., [trading as SUNDWIGER EISENHUTTE MASHINENFABRIK GRAH & CO.]. April 16, 1959 [Feb. 9, 1959], No. 12949/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (3). Reels for winding or unwinding strip material are coupled through variable ratio gearing to D.C. shunt machines regulated to have constant power, the machine coupled to the unwinding reel being operated as a braking generator. The braking torque is kept substantially constant over a wide range of strip speeds, the range of strip tension being extended by adjusting the gearing which provides two values of armature speed for each value of strip speed. This enables low tensions in the strip material to be maintained with accuracy since the corresponding speeds of the braking machine are small. The machine coupled to the take-up reel and operating as a motor is similarly coupled to the reel through variable ratio gearing.
