Abstract

909,410. Disc refiners. JONES CORPORATION, E. D. April 28, 1960, No. 14927/60. Class 59. In a disc refiner for fibrous material having co-operating relatively rotatable discs with blades on their adjacent faces arranged in circumferential segments, one of the discs is provided having the blades 10, Fig. 3, within each segment 11 arranged in clusters, the blades within each cluster being separated by narrow grooves 20 and the clusters being separated internally of the segments by wise grooves 21, each of the grooves 20, 21 being of substantially uniform depth along its length, all of the grooves 20 being of substantially the same width and depth, and at least the major portion of the outer surface of all blades being in a common plane. The grooves 20, 21 may be between about one-quarter and three-quarters of an inch in depth, the surfaces of the blades being between about one-sixteenth and three-sixteenths of an inch in width, the grooves 20 between about onesixteenth and three-sixteenths of an inch in width and the grooves 21 between about one-quarter and three-quarters of an inch in width, the grooves 21 being uniformly spaced apart about one to three inches. The refiner shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises two sets 1, 2 and 3, 4 of co-operating discs and the edges of the blades and extensions 12 thereof converge tangentially to a circle 13. The blades in the segments of disc 2 are arranged parallel to the trailing edges of such segments while the blades in the segments of disc 1 are arranged parallel to the leading edges of the segments in the direction of rotation of disc 2. The blades in the segments of disc 3 are arranged parallel to the leading edges of such segments while the blades in the segments of disc 4 are arranged parallel to the trailing edges of the segments in the direction of rotation of disc 3. The grooves of discs 1 and 4 are substantially the same width as the grooves 20 in the discs 2, 3. To facilitate entry of the material between discs 1, 2 and discharge from discs 3, 4, at least one recess space 15 is provided in each segment. Entry of the material between discs 3, 4 is assisted by bevelling, at 18, the outer edges of alternate blades and by omitting the smallest blade, 22, on each segment of disc 3.
