Abstract

909,093. Moulding hollow articles. RODER, G. June 8, 1959 [June 6, 1958], No. 19555/59. Class 87(2). Hollow articles, e.g. conical containers, are produced by clamping adjacent sections of extruded synthetic thermoplastic tubing 2 between the halves of moulds 3 and 4, which open and close alternately and reciprocate in the direction of extrusion, and inflating the sections in the closed moulds. The halves 6, 7 and 8, 9 of the moulds 3 and 4 respectively are connected by pairs of levers 16 to slide members 10, 11 respectively which are adapted to reciprocate on guide rods 12, 13 via a drive through spindles 14, 15. The outer ends of pairs of levers 16 are connected by links 17 to the piston of a pneumatic cylinder which is actuated to pivot the levers about guides 12 or 13 to open the moulds. Halves 6, 7 of mould 3 enclose a section of tubing adjacent the extruder, 1, and the mould moves away at a greater speed than that at which the tube is extruded. The enclosed tubing is inflated through a clamp having jaws 18, 19 engaging the tube at a waste piece 5b. The opened mould 4 moves back over mould 3 to a position in front of the extrusion orifice and then closes around the tubing which is suitably stretched to provide uniform thickness in the finished container. The clamp of each mould includes a spring-loaded piston, Fig. 3 (not shown), and is closed by actuation of cylinders 31 connected to levers 30 and the contianer is removed by releasing the air, opening the mould, and then releasing the clamp. The apparatus produces a chain of conical containers and if necessary the tubing may be expanded by an external vacuum.
