Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0908966/IV (b)/1> and acid addition salts thereof wherein R1 is an alkyl or aryl group having not more than eight carbon atoms, R2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having not more than five carbon atoms and when R2 is a hydrogen atom R1 may also be a hydrogen atom and wherein the iso quinoline ring system is either unsubstituted in the benzene ring or has alkoxyl groups or an alkylene dioxyl group at positions 6 and 7, each alkoxyl group or alkylene dioxyl group having not more than four carbon atoms, and the preparation thereof by reacting a 1:2:3:4-tetrahydro-iso-quinoline with formaldehyde and a ketonic compound of the formula R2CH2COCHXR1 wherein X is a hydrogen atom or a carboxyl group. The invention also comprises the preparation of benzo(a)quinolizines of the formula <FORM:0908966/IV (b)/2> and acid addition salts thereof wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above, by oxidizing a correspondingly substituted isoquinoline derivative (I) being an oxidizing agent capable of oxidizing a 2-substituted-1:2:3:4-tetrahydroisoquinoline to the corresponding 3:4-dihydroisoquinolinium salt. Suitable agents are mercuric acetate ferric chloride, chlorine, bromine or iodine. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 845,098.
