Abstract

908,965. Pneumatic brakes. KNORRBREMSE G.m.b.H. March 18, 1959 [April 10, 1958], No. 9402/59. Class 103 (1). In a pneumatic braking installation for a train of vehicles in which hauled vehicles are braked by means of a vacuum system and the locomotive vehicle is braked by a compressedair system, the systems are coupled together by means of a relay valve 9 which is controllable pneumatically by each of the brake systems and arranged for transmitting their regulating processes reciprocally. The relay valve 9 consists of two pistons 21, 33, connected together in a coaxial fashion and which are acted upon on one side 25, 35, by constant or substantially constant pressure and on the other side, 11, 29, by the pressures in the brake control pipes (train pipes) of the vacuum 3 and compressed-air systems 1, respectively, the coupled pistons being arranged for actuating two control valves associated one, 43, with the compressed-air system and the other, 15, with the vacuum system. When the brakes are applied, the pressure in the compressed-air brake control pipe 1 is reduced by means of the driver's brake valve (not shown) so that the pressure in the control chamber 29 falls while being fully maintained on the other side of the piston 33 due to the closing of the non-return valve 53. The pistons 21 and 33 therefore descend and the brake valve 15 opens to allow air to pass from chamber 19 via chamber 11 to the pipe 3, thereby causing the vacuum brakes on the hauled vehicles to respond. In the case of application of the brakes initiated via vacuum brake-control pipe during emergency brake applications, the pressure in the piston chamber 11 rises rapidly and the piston system moves upwardly to lift valve 43 off its seat so that compressed-air is evacuated to atmosphere via pipe 49 and the spaces 47 and 41 whereby the compressed-air brakes are also applied.
