Abstract

908,581. Electron beam apparatus. VAKUTRONIK VEB Dec. 4, 1959 [July 4, 1959], No. 41348/59. Class 39 (1). A high-vacuum electron beam furnace for the melting, casting, welding and alloying of metals consists of an electron gun adapted to operate with an accelerating voltage greater than 10 kv., e.g. 10 to 25 kv., and including a solid cathode adapted for operation by pulses of heating current, the emitting surface of the cathode having a cross-sectional area of at least one square centimetre, the cathode 17 being protected from the working chamber 1 by a pressure drop system, reference numeral 9 representing the unions to the vacuum pumps. The system includes magnetic lenses 5 and 6, which successively focus the beam at 15 and 16, and a series of apertured diaphragms 7 which are placed in the path of the beam to increase the gas flow resistance. A valve 11 is provided for isolating the electron source and pressure drop system from the working chamber. An observation window for observing the pattern of the beam is indicated at 10. The magnetic lens 6 has a variable refractive index for controlling the beam and magnetic deflectors may also be provided for static or periodic deflection of the beam. A number of electron source and pressure drop systems may produce intersecting or separate beams in the working chamber.
