Abstract

908,531. Producing magnesium. MAGNESIUM THERMIQUE MAGNETHERM. April 8, 1959 [April 9, 1958], No. 11889/59. Class 82 (1). In an electro-thermal process for the production of magnesium, the magnesia-containing material is reacted with a metallic reducing agent in a liquid slag containing (a) calcium oxide, (b) silica, and (c) alumina, the molar ratio a/b being at least 1.8 and the molar ratio c/b being at least 0.26. The reaction is effected under reduced pressure and the reducing agent may be high-grade ferro-silicon, pure silicon or an iron-silicon-aluminium alloy. In the furnace shown, calcined dolomite and alumina are fed from pipes 13 on to slag formed in a previous reduction. The slag is kept molten by electrodes 4, 12. Ferro-silicon is then fed on to the slag from a further pipe 13 and the magnesium produced is condensed at 17 and falls into a water-cooled crucible 22. When the slag metal reaches 14-14, the furnace is purged with argon and excess slag and low-grade ferro-silicon is withdrawn at 6 until the slag level drops to 15-15. The vacuum is then restored and charging continues as before until the required amount of magnesium has been produced. The calcined dolomite and ferro-silicon may be charged simultaneously if the temperature of the dolomite has not been allowed to drop below 800‹ C. after calcining.
