Abstract

Boron trifluoride/sulphuric acid/water mixtures are used as catalysts for the preparation of carboxylic acids from olefines, carbon monoxide and water. The catalysts preferably contain 40-45 weight per cent BF3, 23-27 weight per cent H2SO4 and 30-35 weight per cent H2O. Examples use a catalyst comprising 3 moles (207g.) BF3, 1,35 moles (133g.) H2SO4 and 8,9 moles (160g.) H2O.ALSO:a ,a -Dialkyl-branched carboxylic acids are prepared from olefines branched at the double bond by continually adding olefin, water and carbon monoxide to a previously prepared mixture of BF3, water and sulphuric acid, the ratio BF3:H2SO4:H2O being kept constant in the reaction zone and as much water being continually injected as is used up by carboxylic acid formation. The catalyst mixture preferably contains 40-45% wt. BF3, 23-27% wt. H2SO4 and 30-35% wt. H2O. Pressures of 50-200 atmospheres and temperatures of 20-50 DEG C. are preferred. The olefin may be diluted with an inert solvent. The carboxylic acid is preferably continuously removed from the reactor. In examples trimethylacetic acid is prepared from isobutylene and a ,a -dimethylvaleric acid from 2-methylpentene-1. Lower and higher acids and some olefin polymerizate are present in the products.
