Abstract
907,638. Coating webs. ELECTRICAL & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 12, 1959 [June 14, 1958], No. 19116/58. Class 140. An apparatus for coating a web 3 with a viscous medium, e.g. including a magnetizable material, comprises means for effecting relative movement between the web and a supply of the medium to apply a coating to the web, a surface 5 contacting the coating, the surface 5 having an exit edge 6 extending across the coating and the dimensions of the surface 5 being such that the length of contact between the coating and the surface 5 in the direction of relative movement varies across the coating, e.g. the edge 6 may be concave, or convex, as shown. The medium, which may comprise gamma ferric oxide in a vinyl copolymer resin with a suitable solvent, is delivered from a trough 1 through slots 14, 15 on to the web 3, the edge 6 smoothing and spreading the coating as indicated by the dashed lines. One slot only may be employed, and other shapes than arcuate are suitable for the edge 6, e.g. V-shaped, and a straight edge 6 perpendicular to the direction of movement of the web 3 may be employed with a slot 14 or 15 so oriented or shaped to produce the required varying length of contact of the surface 5 and the coating. The forward edge of the slot may be arcuate in plan and the front wall of the slot may be arcuate in vertical section. Dimensions of the slot, surface 5, and spacing of the web 3 and surface 5 are given; the rate of passage of the web 3 is 45 feet per minute, the temperature of the medium 78‹ to 82‹ F. and its viscosity 2 poises.
