Abstract
907,362. Toothed gearing. BROWN INDUSTRIES Ltd., DAVID. Dec. 29, 1960 [Jan. 8, 1960], No. 690/60. Class 80 (1). To prevent loss of oil from a gear casing 11 having a shaft 10 emerging vertically downwardly through an opening in its base, the opening is surrounded by a removably fixed shroud 20 extending above the oil level into an annular recess 16 in the gear 15 on the shaft 10 so that the gear can run partly immersed in oil. As shown the oil level, determined by an overflow plug 29, passes through the axis of a worm 17 driving the gear 15. A hole in the gear 15 connects the air space in casing 11 with that in the shroud. The shroud 20 is removably mounted preferably through a resilient ring 21, to which it may be bonded, having a lip engaging a groove in the lower casing cover 13. Alternatively a synthetic rubber 0 ring may be used. Grease for the lower bearing 12 is supplied through a nipple 24 and is retained by a seal 26, a pressure relief valve 25 being provided. A washer 27 impedes the escape of grease into the shroud.
