Abstract

907,231. Stud-and-socket fastenings; rivets. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. Jan. 7, 1959, No. 667/59. Classes 44 and 89 (1). A unit comprises an article 20 having a rearwardly projecting stud 28 and a fastener 32 for fixing the stud in an aperture 50 in a panel 52, the fastener 32 being in the form of a member having a dome-shaped head 34 to fit against the panel adjacent the aperture therein and to engage a complementary recess 30 in the article, and having a shank 36 extending from the head 34 for insertion through the aperture 50, there being an axial aperture extending through the head and into the shank for accommodating the stud, the shank having a transversely yieldable portion for engagement by the stud, the insertion of which prevents subsequent inward yielding of the yieldable portion of the shank to hold the stud and fastener mounted on the panel. In the arrangement shown, the unit is applied to the mounting of a trim moulding 56 on the panel 52, and both the fastener and the article 20 are made of synthetic plastic material such as nylon or polyethylene. In other arrangements, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the stud portion is of slotted frusto-conical form and of arrow-head form, respectively.
