Abstract

Polypropylene compositions comprise as antistatic agent a compound having a solubility in water of at least 0,5 grams per 100 grams of water at 25 DEG C. and having the general formula HO(Y-O)xH in which Y is an ethylene or propylene group and x is an integer that gives a polymer having a molecular weight between 200 and 900 or when Y is propylene, up to 1,200. The antistatic agent may be incorporated in the polypropylene together with a compatible surface-active agent, e.g. sulphonated petroleum oils, alkyl phenoxyethylene alkanols and octylphenyl polyethylene glycols, and optionally stabilizing agents, slip-agents, antiblocking agents and drawing agents, e.g. stearamide, oleamide, silica, butylated hydroxyanisole, 2,4,6-trialkyl phenols, bis(2-methyl-1,4-hydroxy-5-tert. butyl phenyl) sulphide, thiodipropionic acids and esters and 4,41-butylidene bis(6-tert. butyl alkyl phenols). The compositions may be used for making films, filaments, tapes, sheets and other shaped articles. Specification 752,820, 777,538, 789,698 and 824,480 are referred to.
