A pressure gauge in which deformation of an element (e.g. bellows) is resisted by a yieldable spring is fitted with a safety device which closes the fluid flow passage to the deformable element when the element has been deformed a predetermined amount. As shown in Fig. 1, fluid whose pressure is to be measured is supplied through a pipe 9 to bellows 2 which expand raising a member 5 and a rod 10 attached thereto. Movement of member 5, which is resisted by a spring 17 adjustable by means of a screw 20, is indicated on a dial by means of toothed rack 22 and gear 23 on spindle 24. The rod 10 has a valve head 13 which engages a seating 16 to close the fluid supply passage when the bellows 2 have been deformed a predetermined amount. A tension spring replaces the compression spring 17 in an instrument for measuring pressures below atmospheric. Two gauges, one inverted, may be combined, Fig. 5, to measure the difference between two pressures. The gauge has two dials 31, 32, Figs. 7 and 8, rotated by gears 37, 38 on toothed racks 39, 40 respectively. The dial 31 is smaller and has an aperture 33 and fixed pointer 44 so that graduations 43 on disc 32 are visible to indicate pressure difference.
