Abstract
A lubricating and sealing ribbon for a threaded joint comprising mating male and female threaded fittings, e.g. a pipe joint, is made by mixing polytetrafluoroethylene powder with an extrusion aid, e.g. naphtha or white oil, and extruding into a strip which is then rolled to the desired thickness and passed through a heating device at a temperature high enough to evaporate the extrusion aid but not to cause sintering. During the extrusion process, the polytetrafluoroethylene particles are elongated so as to become fibril-like in structure and oriented in cohering side-by-side relation to one another. Even though the elongated particles cohere sufficiently for the ribbon to be stretched over the male threaded fitting, they are not coalesced as they would be in a sintered polytetrafluoroethylene film and the ribbon is thus compressible and readily conformable to the shape of the threads. After having the ribbon wound around it, the male fitting is threaded into the female fitting to form the sealed joint. The ribbon is of at least 1mm. thickness and of a specific gravity between 1,2 and 1,8.
