Abstract

905,863. Metallurgical converters. GENERAL REFRACTORIES Ltd. July 6, 1961 [Aug. 9, 1960], No. 27515/60. Class 72. A basic refractory bottom for a Bessemer converter comprises a plurality of refractory blocks, each having at least one metal tube extending lengthwise therethrough, assembled in spaced relation to one another, the spaces being filled with a refractory material. As shown, a block 9 is formed by compacting a refractory material round a metal tube 10 in a press, the tube extending out of each end of the block. The blocks may then be arranged on a bottom plate 11 of a converter bottom, the tubes at one end extending into holes 13 in the plate and being secured therein by peening, the other end of the tubes being cut off. The spaces 14 between the blocks are filled with a basic refractory material and heat treated to remove volatile matter. The blocks may be heat treated before assembly or may be assembled in the " green " state and heated with the completed bottom.
