Abstract

905,452. Automatic exchange systems. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Oct. 13, 1960 [Oct. 14, 1959], No. 35099/60. Class 40 (4). Each cross-point of a co-ordinate switching array includes a hold winding in series with an associated set of contacts between a row and column wire. The arrangement is more particularly applied to an exchange such as shown in Fig. 2 where three stages of co-ordinate switches A, B and C connect single wire paths between subscribers, each stage operating a contact such as Ka, Kb or Kc which is held by an associated hold winding Ha, Hb, or Hc connected in series with the path and a battery S. The hold windings may be shunted by capacitors or be provided with short-circuit windings to reduce their impedance to -speech. In Fig. 2 the hold windings are also employed as select windings to operate as well as hold their associated contacts as determined by markings extended from a marker M to selected windings along the path. As shown in Fig. 3, however, separate select windings are used for each co-ordinate the contacts being of the sealed tube magnetic type embraced by their windings and having a flux return path R from which the contacts are insulated. The flux return path forms a base in common to a row of contacts and similar rows are stacked one above the other to form the co-ordinate array. Each contact has a centrally positioned hold winding H on one side of which is a co-ordinate winding Y common to the row and on the other side of which is the other co-ordinate winding X individual to each contact and connected in multiple from stack to stack. Once a contact has been operated by coincident drive from an X and a Y winding, and it has been connected in a speech path, the hold windings are energized and the select windings may be released. Short-circuit windings on the hold coils may be provided by coating a metal on the ends of the coils or by attaching conductive rings. Specification 797,913 is referred to.
