Abstract
The invention comprises water-insoluble disazo dyes of formula <FORM:0904963/IV (b)/1> wherein R, R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen or methyl or ethyl radicals, R1 being different from R2. They may be used to dye hydrocarbon polymers and halogen substituted hydrocarbon polymers. In examples the preparation of the dyes 4-amino-3:21- or -2:31-dimethyl-azobenzene --> N:N-dimethyl-m-toluidine, 4-amino-2:5:41-trimethyl-azobenzene --> N:N-diethyl-o-toluidine and 4-amino-2:5:31:51-tetramethyl-azobenzene --> N:N-dimethyl-p-xylidine is described. 4-Amino-2:5:41-trimethyl-azobenzene is prepared by coupling diazotised 4-methylaniline with 2:5-dimethylaniline o -methanesulphonic acid sodium salt and treating the monoazo compound with alcoholic sodium hydroxide.
