Abstract

904,823. Loading railway wagons. DASEY, H. H. Oct. 14, 1958, No. 32729/58. Class 103(4). A railway freight car 1, Figs. 2 and 3, is provided with a plurality of inflatable air bags 13 and an air supply system 21, 22, 24, 25 and 15 including a compressed air storage tank 23. The bags extend transversely of the freight compartment and have eyelets 10, 11 engaging hooks 8, 9 on hangers 6, 7 movable along rails 4, 5 supported at 4a, 5a from the car roof. The air supply pipe 15 supported at 18 'from the roof has automatic safety valves 16 connected at 19 to flexible hoses connected to the bags 13, the latter being formed with cells 13a. The bags are inflated between articles of freight 14 as shown in Fig. 2, and the articles are thus resiliently packed between the car end walls and wire screens 28 supported from the rails 4, 5, and releasably fastened to car floor by pins 32 latched by latches 34 and releasable by springs 33. When the air supply at 21 is disconnected the bags can be inflated by the air in the tank 23, a suitable valve being provided in the pipe 22 and closable when the pipe 21 is disconnected. The expansion of the bags is controlled by a regulator valve 25. The valve 16 for each bag shuts off automatically in event of the pressure falling due to leakage or puncturing of the bag.
