An electric detonator comprises a casing 1, an explosive charge 2 and a bridge wire of resistance R G ohms, the value of R G being so chosen that the minimum ignition current required is greater than 1 amp. An auxiliary resistance is connected in series with the bridge wire and its resistance R 1 ohms is chosen so that the total detonator resistance R S ohms measured at the free ends of the connecting wires 4 corresponds to a minimum ignition voltage greater than 3.5 volts. The auxiliary resistance within the casing 1 may be dispensed with and the connecting wires themselves so formed that they provide, when in series with the bridge wire, a suitable resistance value R S ohms.
