Abstract

<PICT:0904229/III/1> An apparatus for effecting the continuous anionic polymerization of lactams combined with the extrusion of the resultant polymer to obtain profiled articles comprises at least 2 storage tanks (A and B) for the monomer with the polymerization accelerator dissolved therein, heated metering pumps (E and F) adopted to force the mixtures from the tanks into the cylindrical polymerization reactor (H) provided with an external heating jacket (J), and an extrusion die (L) through which polymer formed in the reaction is forced by the pump. In a modification, a rotatable shaft provided with a conver screw (K) over at least part of its length is located within the reactor.ALSO:<PICT:0904229/IV(a)/1> In a process for the continuous anionic polymerization of lactams, a reaction mixture of monomer and polymerization accelerator is forced in the absence of water into a reactor by means of a pump located at the inlet of the reactor, the reactor being maintained at a temperature sufficient to effect polymerization of the lactam and above the softening point of the polymer, the reactor being completely filled by the reaction mixture and the product polymer being forced by the pump through an extrusion device located at the outlet end of the reactor. Specified polymerization accelerators are compounds of the general formula <FORM:0904229/IV(a)/1> where R and R1 are hydrogen or alkyl or R and R1 together form a hydrocarbon chain and X is an acyl, carbalkoxyl or cyano group, e.g. amixture of the sodium salts of 6-caprolactam and N-acetyl-6-caprolactam. In the example, storage tank A contains 6-caprolactam and storage tank B contains a solution of the sodium salt of 6-caprolactam in 6-caprolactam, the reactants being fed via E and F into the reactor H and thence by the screw conveyer K through the extrusion nozzle L.
