Abstract

1,194,440. Polymer compositions; recovery of monomers and solvents. MITSUI TOATSU CHEMICALS Inc. 19 Nov., 1968, No. 54772/ 68. Heading B1B. A volatile substance, e.g. a monomer and or solvent, is removed from a polymer composition, or other mixture of viscous material and volatile substance, by injecting the mixture through pipe 1 and orifices 5 to form strands 6 in a vessel 3, maintained under sub-atmospheric pressure e.g. 50-100 Hg. absolute, wherein the strands impact the peaked roof 21 of a hollow elongated heater 20 and the material flows, in the form of a film, down the hot walls 22 and 23. Volatile substance is vaporized from the strands with foaming. Residual volatile substance is vaporized from the film. Voltatile substances are withdrawn from vessel 3 through opening 15; and the devolatilized material flows out through outlet 16. The mixture is heated under pressure before it is injected through orifices 5 into vessel 3. The orifices 5 have a diameter of about 3 mm. Conduits are provided for circulating heating fluid through the heater 20, and through the jacket 17 of vessel 3. The strand-former is also provided with a heating- jacket 7. Examples are given which relate to the removal of styrene and solvent (ethyl benzene or toluene) from a reaction solution obtained by bulk polymerization of styrene. The polystyrene product contains less than 0.5 wt. % of volatile substance. Volatile substances can also be removed by this process from acrylonitrile-styrene copolymerized resins, and from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymerized resins.
