Abstract
904,139. Sliding clasp fastenings. OPTIHOLDING A.G. Feb. 5, 1959 [Feb. 6, 1958], No. 4152/59. Class 44. Apparatus for use with single or double-stitch sewing machines for making sliding clasp fasteners by sewing one or two threads of synthetic plastics material into one or two stringer tapes respectively, comprises a supplying device for the thread, a guide path for the thread, a separating knife for cutting the thread into predetermined lengths and being actuated under the control of a length-measuring device after passage from the supplying device, the operation of the supplying device and the length-measuring device being stopped when the knife is operated and an electrical control device between the knife and the sewing machine, which starts the operation of the supplying device and the length-measuring device when reached by an end of the cut-off length of the thread. As shown, pre-formed toothed thread 2 of plastics material is fed from a drum 4 along a guide path 1 to a sewing machine A where the thread is stitched to a stringer tape 17. Preferably, two interlocked threads are fed from the drum 4 for sewing to respective stringer tapes simultaneously. The length-measuring device comprises a roller 6 driven by the moving thread 2 and driving on an endless strip 8 which controls switch contacts 12, 13 of a switching relay 14 controlling the drum 4. When the latter is stopped, a knife 5 operates and the separated lengths of thread 2 continue to move towards the sewing machine A until the forward end abuts a contact 16 which closes a circuit for re-starting the drum 4 and hence the roller 6. The position of the contact 16 is adjustable to vary the distance between the separated lengths of thread. The length-measuring device may comprise an electronic control with a resistance/capacity time base. The fastener elements may be formed as a continuous oval section coil, Fig. 2 (not shown), attached to a guide cord; a flattened coil, Fig. 3 (not shown), or a series of teeth joined by coupling parts and shaped by stretching.
