Abstract

903,967. Thermometers. MINNEAPOLISHONEYWELL REGULATOR CO. March 17, 1961, No. 9900/61. Class 97 (3). An indicator for showing the temperature history of a frozen food package or other article comprises a piece of filter or blotting paper 11 impregnated with an electrolyte such as an aqueous eutectic solution of potassium chloride and having a pair of dissimilar mutually-spaced metal electrodes 12, 13 such as of copper and tin, in contact therewith to form a galvanic cell, the arrangement being such that below a predetermined temperature substantially no change occurs, but above that temperature path migration of the hydroxyl ions or other product of the electrolytic action which takes place, progressively indicates the integrated time-temperature history of the article. As shown, the electrolyte is contained within a glass via 15 so that on freezing, the vial is ruptured and on subsequent thawing the paper 11 is impregnated, electrolytic action ensues and the mobility of the hydroxyl ions is indicated by a colour change in the phenolphthalein with which the paper 11 is impregnated.
