Abstract

An impregnating composition for electrical windings and insulation fabrics for use in electrical apparatus comprises a solution in a mild solvent having a kauri-butanol value between 65 and 105 of a nitrogen resin and a gellable non-drying oil-modified terephthalic or isophthalic acid alkyd resin in which the oilmodified alkyd resin has an acid value of less than 4 mg. KOH/g. and an oil length of less than 40%, the proportion of nitrogen resin being from 5-20% by weight of the total resin solids. The term nitrogen resin refers to urea-, melamine- and benzoguanamine-formaldehyde resins. Mild solvents specified include xylol, toluene and naphtha, as well as methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone and a -methyl cyclohexanone. Specified reagents for preparing the alkyds are fatty acids lauric, oleic and palmitic acids or coconut oil, hydrogenated castor oil and palm oil may be used directly polyhydroxy compounds ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, glycerol, trimethylol propane, trimethylol ethane and pentaerythritol and mixtures thereof, particularly mixtures of glycols with glycerol or pentaerythritol. Example 1 describes the two-stage preparation of a suitable alkyd by preparing in the first stage a monoglyceride by heating a mixture of lauric acid, glycerol and white spirit and in the second stage heating this monoglyceride with dimethyl terephthalate, glycerol, ethylene glycol, zinc acetate and white spirit.
