Abstract

A paint binder comprises a polyester of acid number between 40 and 70 prepared by reacting a fatty acid having multiple olefinic unsaturation with excess of a polyol having at least 3 hydroxyl groups and reacting the intermediate so formed with a dibasic acid containing up to 8 carbon atoms and a tribasic acid, the ratio of these acids being at least 3:1. The fatty acid may contain conjugated double bonds. A water-miscible paint may be derived from the polyester by dissolving it in a hydrophilic solvent and adding an amine which boils below 110 DEG C. a drier and a pigment. The solvent may comprise equal weights of ethyl-lactate or ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and an alcohol boiling below 125 DEG C. In an example, a polyester derived from a soyabean oil fatty acid/pentaerythritol condensate, trimellitic acid anhydride, and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride was mixed with ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, isobutanol, triethylamine, isopropanol, water, TiO2, and cobalt and lead octoates.
