Abstract

903,479. Knitting. LEVIN, N. Nov. 24, 1958 [Dec. 9, 1957], No. 37763/58. Class 74 (2). A machine has a circle of needles which can be reciprocated to knit body fabric at a plurality of circumferentially - spaced feeds to form a pair of body fabric diamonds having common wales and suture joined edges and means to selectively feed a design yarn, during the reciprocation, to permit the group of needles forming the common wales to draw loops of that yarn, independently of the body fabric knitting, to form a line of stitches of design yarn in the common wales and extending uninterruptedly across the suture joined edges of the diamonds, to provide an overplaid in both diamonds. At each of the feeds 1-4 are provided selectively-operated body yarn fingers 54; and between the feeds are overplaid yarn fingers 35-38, each of which can be swung to supply yarn at either of the adjacent feeds. The fingers 35, 37 are linked by a rod 50 and the fingers 36, 38 by a rod 49; thus the members of each pair move in unison. Body yarns may be supplied to selected needles by selected ones of fingers 54 at feeds 1 and 3, or at feeds 2 and 4, to form a pair of the diamonds 20-24 of a sock or the like, whilst all the fingers 54 at the other two feeds are raised to inoperative positions, the pairs 35, 37 and 36, 38 of overplaid fingers being swung in alternation across the needle circle, to supply yarn at these other feeds to selected needles to form overplaids 31-34. The pairs of overplaid fingers are swung into and out of feeding position, relative to feeds 1 and 3, by a cam 65 and, relative to feeds 2 and 4, by a cam 64. The cams are borne on a shaft 66 which rotates once for every four rotations or for every complete forward and reverse movement of the needle cylinder, and they act through rollers 63, bell-cranks 59, 60 and link and lever systems. The rollers 63 are moved from a neutral position, into the path of either cam, by the combined action of a spring 93 and cams 90, 91 on the main pattern control drum 92. Such movement of the rollers into an active position, flexes flat springs 78, 79, which serve as return-springs. Each of the four overplaid yarns 31-34 extends in a zig-zag line of which the straight runs extend across sutures 30 and between centres of adjacent diamonds thus, for example, yarn 31 runs between the centres of diamonds 24, 22, 25, 23 and 26. Specification 790,141 is referred to.
