Abstract

Silica bricks containing at least 90% SiO2 and having a porosity of from 15 - 70% by volume are crushed to provide small pieces, the pieces are milled or otherwise shaped to provide pebble-like pieces of a catalyst support which is thereafter impregnated with a solution containing a soluble nickel salt and treated to convert the salt to oxide. Additionally the shaped pieces may be impregnated with a soluble magnesium salt. The bricks may contain 93% SiO2 and preferably have a porosity of from 23 to 30% by volume. The catalyst support is preferably impregnated such that the catalyst finally contains 2 - 10% by weight of nickel oxide and additionally 0,4 - 1% of magnesia. Examples are given, some of which describe the use of the catalyst for hydrocarbon/steam reactions.
