Abstract

903,281. Securing wheels to hubs. HOLBROW, R. F. Dec. 23, 1959 [May 6, 1959; Aug. 19, 1959], Nos. 15490/59 and 28303/59. Class 144 (1). The nuts 19 securing a wheel to the studs 20 of a permanent hub are rotated simultaneously by a sun gear 18 rotatably carried in a plate 10 to engage pinions 25 carried by each nut 19, each pinion 25 having a frictional driving connection with its associated nut 19 which is overcome at a predetermined torque Whereby as each nut binds in its wheel-securing position the sun gear 18 may be further rotated to complete the tightening ofthe other nuts. As shown, the sun gear 18 is carried by a winged hub cap 13 journalled in the plate 10, and each nut 19 has an end collar 28 left-handedly screwed thereon whereby it is journalled in a suitably positioned hole 29 in the plate 10, the nuts being retained therein by a bolt 30 screwed into the nut. Each pinion 25 has right-hand screw-threaded engagement on its associated nut and is tightened against the collar 28 to provide the friction drive, a spring 31 being interposed between the pinion 25 and a hexagon collar 32 integral with the lead end of the nut 19. A non-metallic friction washer may be positioned between the pinion 25 and the collar 28.
