Abstract

Dimethylol-urea starch containing 0,28% of dimethylol-urea is made by heating a 32% aqueous suspension of starch to at least 115 DEG F., adding an aqueous solution of dimethylol-urea, agitating the mixture for two hours, adding soda ash to bring its pH to between 7,5 and 8,0, isolating the dimethylol-urea starch by filtration and then washing and drying it. The aqueous suspension of starch is prepared by mixing 300 parts by weight of starch with water and adding sufficient mineral acid, e.g. sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, to bring the pH to about 4,0. The solution of dimethylol-urea is made by dissolving 0,81 parts of dimethylol-urea in 1,66 parts of water, heating the solution to boiling point and cooling and diluting it with sufficient water to bring its volume to twice that of the said 1,66 parts of water. U.S.A. Specifications 2,407,071 and 2,838,465 are referred to.ALSO:An adhesive composition, for use, in an aqueous alkaline medium, in the manufacture of faced corrugated paper-board, comprises fully gelatinized starch and a granular, uncooked, highly cross-linked, partially inhibited, ungelatinized starch product, which does not become fully gelatinized in water, but does become fully gelatinized and highly viscous when heated, e.g. to a temperature between 120 and 200 DEG F., in an aqueous alkaline solution of borax, and is the separated dried product obtained by reacting native starch with 0,12 to 0,42% of dimethylolurea (based on the weight of starch) in an aqueous suspension having a pH between 1,5 and 7,0, which is adjusted, before separation, to between 4,5 and 10,0 (see Group IV(a)). The adhesive composition may contain between 15 and 25% by weight, based on the total starch content, of the fully gelatinized starch, between 85 and 75% of the said ungelatinized starch product, up to 7,5% of borax, based on the weight of the ungelatinized starch product, and caustic soda. U.S.A. Specifications 2,407,071 and 2,838,465 are referred to.
