Abstract

Polysaccharide derivatives are obtained by reacting a polysaccharide which is soluble or dispersible in cold or hot water with a sultone in the presence of an alkaline substance. The sultones may be 1, 3-propanesultone, 1, 4-butanesultone, mixtures of isomeric butanesultones, benzylsultone and tolylsultone; preferably, g -sultones are used. The polysaccharide may be starch in its natural form, or dextrinated, acid-modified, thin-boiling, oxidized, etherified, or esterified starch, or amylose or amylopectin; specified starches are those of corn, wheat, potato, tapioca, waxy corn, sago, or rice. Natural plant hydrocolloids such as gum arabic, gum tragacanth, carob gum, guar gum or alginates may also be used. The sultones may be reacted with the air-dry polysaccharide and the product used without further processing, or reaction may be effected in suspension or solution in a liquid and the product dried, e.g. by passing over a heated rotating cylinder. The resulting polysaccharide ether sulphonic acids and salts may be used as textile sizes, and for paper coating and sizing, as protective colloids in oil well drilling muds, and as adhesives. In a typical Example (No. 1) 2,000 parts, by weight, of potato starch, 3,000 parts of water and 120 parts of NaOH were mixed at 60 DEG -70 DEG C. and 360 parts of g -propane sultone added over a period of 15 minutes and then the mass allowed to stand for 30 minutes. The resulting product containing the sodium salt of starch propane sulphonic acid was pressed on a heated rotated drum and then ground.
