Abstract

1406908 Cationic polysaccharide derivatives NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP 29 March 1973 [31 March 1972] 15110/73 Headings C3U and C3A [Also in Division D2] Water dispersible polysaccharide derivatives are obtained by reacting the polysaccharide in aqueous colloidal dispersion containing no more than 30% by weight of said polysaccharide, with a derivatizing agent having at least one cationic group and at least two functional groups reactive with the polysaccharide, e.g. N- beta-chloroethyl-4-(3-chloropropyl)piperidine or tris-beta-chloroethylamine. The reaction is advantageously performed by operating at 80- 160‹ C. in a continuous cooker. In the examples starch is reacted with, in addition to the above reagents, N-methyl piperazine and a condensate of 1,6-hexanediamine with epichlorohydrin, and methyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl is reacted with condensation products of N,N-dimethyl propanediamine and epichlorohydrin.
