Abstract
902,251. Milling; planing; turning. WILLIAMSON, J. B. P. Aug. 21, 1958 [Aug. 21, 1957], No. 26360/57. Class 83 (3). In a method of heating work during machining, heat is supplied by an electric current which passes through a tool. The tool 5, Fig. 1, comprises a copper shank having water-cooling passages 6, a non-conducting ceramic cutting- tip 8, and a contacting surface 9 for heating the work. The current may be conducted through the tip 8. The return-path for the heating current may be a slip-ring, mounted on the chuck of a lathe for example. The tool may have two conducting portions separated by a non-conductive material, said portions acting as current supply and return electrodes. In a modification a battery of electrodes 13, Fig. 4, is used in conjunction with a tool 15 and the current is controlled by variable resistors 16. The position at which a chip separates from the work is stated to be a function of temperature distribution, the control of which can adjust the depth of cut. The method may be applied to drilling and milling. If temperature variations are produced cyclically with rotation of the work, workpieces of non-circular section can be produced.
