Abstract
902,105. Winding and reeling. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Jan. 13, 1961 [Jan. 13, 1960; April 4, 1960], Nos. 1308/60 and 11827/60. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A machine for withdrawing two or more wires from a supply, twisting the wires together and then delivering the resulting strand in helical form to a receiver where it is accommodated as a plurality of superposed loops comprises means 37, 39, Figs. 1 and 2, for supporting the receiver 40 beneath a haul-off device 31 which delivers the strand downwards to the receiver 40 in helical form around the vertical axis of the machine, a guide 47, Fig. 2, for the wires and which is rotated by an arm 12 and a disc 19 about the receiver 40 and the haul-off device 31, and means for leading the wires along the machine axis as at B, Figs. 1 and 2, radially outwards as at C, Fig. 2, through the guide 47 as at D, radially inwards as at E, and then along the machine axis as at F into the haul-off device 31 from which the wires pass as strand downwards in helical form into the receiver 40. The disc 19, carrying the arm 14, is rotatably mounted between two stationary sun pinions 17, 24, and is driven through a belt drive 15, the motion of the disc 19 also serving to drive, through belts 32, 34 and 36, a flyer 28 rotating within a stationary tubular casting 26 carrying a circular metal track 27. The flyer 28 carries a first pulley 50 for directing the incoming wires radially outwards and a second pulley 31 running on the track 27. From the pulley 50 the wires are carried to the part of the periphery of the pulley 31 which is approaching the track 27. The wires, which by now are twisted together to form a strand, finally pass between the pulley 31 and the track 27, and thence through a tubular guide 51 from which they pass as a helix along the path H into the container 40. The wires are drawn through the machine by the rolling action of the pulley 31 on the track 27. Planet pinions 20 to 23, carried by the rotating disc 19, interconnect the upper sun pinion 17 with the lower sun pinion 24. Since the upper sun pinion is rigid with the machine casing this arrangement holds the lower sun pinion 24, and the tubular casting 26 connected thereto, against rotation. The stationary sun pinion has a number of depending rods 52 that hold a lower platform 37 against rotation. On the platform 37 is a gear-box 43 that is used to slowly turn a platform 37 carrying the receiver 40. The rotation of the receiver 40 causes the strand to be evenly distributed therein. To assist in the even distribution of the strand the container rotates about an axis which is offset from the axis of the flyer 28. According to a modified construction the sun pinions 17, 24 are dispensed with and the tubular casting 26 is held stationary by magnetic means. According to a further construction, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown), a machine is provided in which the receiver is coaxial with the main common axis of the machine and in which the tubular casting is offset from said common axis, the tubular casting being adapted to rotate about its own axis at the same time as it rotates about the main common axis of the machine. In both constructions the receiver may, if desired, remain stationary. Specifications 868,152 and 897,459 are referred to.
