Abstract

902,062. Hammer grinder installations. BROYEURS GONDARD. May 3, 1961 [May 4, 1960], No. 15978/61. Class 59. [Also in Group XXX] A hammer grinder installation for grinding domestic refuse, fodder and like material comprises a parallelepipedic tub 5, a drum 14 carrying hammers 15 rotatable in the tub, a semi-cylindrical screen 17 beneath the drum, a vertical chimney 19 surmounting the tub and connected by a hood 21 at its upper end to an adjacent casing 20 provided with an outlet trap door 11, and a charging hopper 8 communicating with the tub through an inlet 25 in one wall of the chimney, the arrangement beng such that ground material passes through the screen 17 and the remainder is deflected upwardly. The ground material falls through the screen 17 to a conveyer 9 and solid grindable material too large to be ground at the first attempt remains, due to its weight, in the tub 5 until it is reduced to smaller pieces, the large but lighter grindable material being raised by centrifugal force and currents of air created by the hammers and carried upwards where it is dispersed by the said air currents and contact with the wall of the hood 21 and falls back into the tub; non-grindable heavier objects, e.g. tins, are flattened between the hammers and screen 17 and projected by centrifugal force towards the hood 21 where they are directed by inertia into the casing 20 to await disposal through the trap door 11. This door may be either pivoted or slidable and operable by hand or motor, and if desired, it can be arranged to be operated synchronously with the operation of a pivoted or slidable shutter 22, Fig. 4, disposed between the chimney 19 and casing 20, so that one is closed when the other is open; such synchronous operation may be controlled by an automatic timing device employing relays or clockwork. A trap door covering the opening 25 between the hopper and the chimney is slidably mounted in guides and can be held at the desired height by means of two bolts engaging holes in the supporting guides and the door itself. In another embodiment, the casing 20 is divided into two vertical compartments by a vertical partition, one compartment, which is adjacent the chimney, extending down to the base of the chimney and there communicating with the latter through a trap door. In operation, the compartment adjacent the chimney will collect and recycle some of the lighter material that has been carried over by the air flow and the outer compartment will collect the heavier material for disposal.
