9 Claims. (Cl. 110-9) This invention relates broadly to mechanism for the combustion of fecal matter, and more specifically to improvements in the combination of a closet and incinerator designed for use in a home, factory, summer cottage, camp, mobile unit and like environs.
The invention further pertains to certain structural and functional improvements in closets of the type disclosed in an application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed on December 28, 1955, by George 0. Harm, Serial No. 555,892, now Patent No. 2,835,214, entitled Dry Closets.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a shuttle or transfer case for the transmission of a strip of folded paper and the fecal matter carried thereby from the feed rollers in the machine to the incinerator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shuttle,
supporting mechanism which is constructed to accommodate the ready attachment thereof to the incinerator housing.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a supporting structure for a roll of .paper which is arranged to eliminate divergent movement of the paper strand drawn from the roll.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closet seat. and lid assembly which may be dismantled as a unit from the bowl without the use of tools.
Another object of .the invention is to provide a baflie plate in. the incinerator to direct the flame under the paper strip and over the rearward face thereof.
Anotherv object of the invention is to provide an improved ash receiving; tray in theincinerator.
Further objects of the invention reside in the arrangement of the motor, fuel pump, blower and the electric controls therefore in the incinerator.
Other objects and advantages more or less ancillary to the foregoing, and the manner in which all the various objects are realized, will appear in the following description, which considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, sets forth in the preferred embodiment of the invention.

Referring first to Fig. 1, the dry toiletcomprises generally a bowl 10 having a cover 11 thereon, a seat-12 hinged on the top thereof, an incinerator 13 connected .itothe bowl, and a stack or exhaust conduit 14 mounted on theincinerator to carry off the heat generated therein. The bowl, which is preferably formed of a molded plastic material reinforced with fabric, embodies asquare top portion, a bowl 15 depending therefrom, and an integral rectangular housing 16 protruding from the rearward portion of the bowl for the receptionv of the paper feed rolls, drive gearing and actuating mechanism therefor.
The interior of the bowl and housing 16, as will be seen in Figs. 4 and 5, is provided with a rectangular frame 17 ful'cru-med adjacent the top thereof upona rod 18' mounted in bearing blocks 19 affixed to the inner side walls of the-housing 16. The frame is inclined downwardly and thefree end thereof rests upon the Wall of the base of the bowl 10. The frame hasfla strut 20 mounted thereon,.constituting asupport stanchion I for aguide plate 21, and a frame cross member having a pair of paper roll brackets 22 depending from the sides of the end portionsthereof. The strut 20.is-uinclinedforwardly and upwardly and terminatesv below the forward lower edge of a subtended flange 23v on,
the cover 11. The brackets: 22 are of triangular form, and the lower end portions thereof are fabricated to receive a spindle 24 for a roll of moisture proof, flam- 29 terminating adjacent the lower end or throat of the trough. The. upper ends of the flange support guide shoes 30, formed to initiate an upwardly directed fold and in-the opposed marginal edges of the paper 25- and the convergent side walls 28 of the plate, complete the fold. anddirect the strand through the U troughand past the ends 27 of the. guide plate. The housing. 16 is provided with a pair of spaced. vertical rollers 31-;arranged in parallel relation with each other and the medial .axis. thereof equidistant the horizontal center of. the
.U trough in: the plate 21. The rollers are hollow and formed with. end plates 32 therein which are bored; to provide journal bearings for the spindles. thereforwhich are. affixed at their upper endsin bosses depending from a pair of hell. cranks 33 and 34- mounted on the rod 1 8. The outer. end of the bell crank 33 is drilled and. tapped for the reception of a threaded sleeve 35 slidably mounted. on the rod 18 and a collar 36 is loosely mounted on the rod between the sleeve and the frame 17 to facilitate lateral adjustment. of the bell crank. The inner end of the bell crank 34' is bored to receive a bushing 37 mounted: for free rotational movement on the. rod 18 Patented Nov. 4, 1958 with the outer end thereof disposed in abutting relation with the frame 17. The bell crank 34 is further drilled and reamed for the support of a shaft 40, the outer end "portion of which is provided with a lever 41 (Fig. 3) for rotating the shaft while the inner end thereof supports .a ratchet wheel 42 bushed for rotational movement on the shaft.
The outer face of the ratchet wheel is aflixed to a pulley 43 and an arm 44, secured to the shaft 40, supports a pawl 45 engaged with the teeth of the ratchet wheel. The ratchet and pawl are formed to rotate the pulley clockwise upon the forward and downward movement of the arm 41. The outer arm 46 of the bell crank 34 is bored for the reception of a pin 47 which supports a sheave 48 and a belt 49 is roved over the sheave and the pulley 43. The central portion of the lower run of the belt is impinged between the paper strand 25 and the walls of the upper ends of the rollers 31. The pin 47 is provided with eccentric pintles 50 which are locked by'a set screw 51 after the belt is adjusted in parallel relation with the upper ends on the rollers. The shaft ;40" has an arm 52 secured thereon having a stud 53 in the'end thereof which is engaged within the yoked end of a bell crank 54 fulcrumed on a bracket 55 secured to the cross member on the upper end of the frame 17. The depending arm 56 of the bell crank is engaged with a pair of spaced lugs 57 (Fig. 8) mounted on the outer "wall of a shuttle 58 which slides in channel irons 59 and 60 mounted in the upper and lower edges of an opening 61 in the incinerator (Fig. 3). A door 62 is mounted for lateral sliding movement in the wall of the incinerator above the bowl to arrest the propagation of heat from 'the firing chamber of the incinerator. The side walls of the shuttle are apertured (Fig. 8) with an opening 58a to accommodate the entry of the door and impingement of the paper strand against the door jamb 63 upon completion of the inward movement of the door. The door is reciprocated by a lever 64 pivotally mounted adjacent its lower end on a cover plate 65 on the incinerator. The lever is drilled with a clearance hole therein for a cap screw 66 mounted in the door and movable through an arcuate slot 67 in the cover plate. The door is normally held in its closed position by a spring 68 connected to a bracket 69 on the cover plate and "arod 70 adjacent the top of the lever 64. The rod fprotrudes outwardly beyond the bracket in order to support the spring in a biased position and thus effectuate an inward tensioned strain on the lever. The outer end of the rod 70 is provided with a lug 38 (Fig. 3) disposed to engage a switch 39 upon an inward axial movement of the rod. The switch is electrically connected to the blower, fuel valve, and ignition device on the incinerator and initiates the combustion cycle thereof when the switch is closed. If desired, a solenoid 105 (Fig. 9) may be attached to the rod 70 for the retraction of the door 62, the solenoid being controlled by lines 106 and 107 coupled with a switch 108 actuated by a lug 109 on the shuttle. The lever 41, when oscillated, eflects the reciprocation of the door by an arm 71 attached to the shaft 40 and engaged with a cam plate 72 afiiXed to the upper end of the lever 64. The cam plate is fabricated from sheet metal bent in substantially U-shaped form, in vertical section, with the inner edge of the forward face thereof inclined upwardly and inwardly to a point adjacent the center of the plate. The inclined edge of the plate defines a cam 73 having a throw slightly greater than the width of the shuttle 58 so the door will clear the shuttle upon the simultaneous reciprocative movement of the door and shuttle. The upper portion of the forward face of the cam plate is inclined rearwardly so that the arm 71 will escape the cam 73 at the top of iits arcuate movement, andthe spring 68 will effect the inward movement of the lever 64, thus moving the cam plate into position for engagement with the opposed edge 74 of the plate. The edge 74 of the plate 72 is inclined downwardly and outwardly to a point slightly below the peak of the cam 73 where an inset notch, defining a shoulder 75, intercepts the inclined face thereof and provides a stop for the arm 71 to prevent reverse of movement of the lever 41 by the operator. The lever 41 is urged counterclockwise, towards an upright position, by a spiral spring 76 anchored at one end to the shaft 40, and at its other end to the face of the frame 17. Full rotative movement of the shaft is arrested by a cam 77 afiixed to the shaft and designed for engagement of the crest thereof with the upper face of the frame 17. The lower run of the belt 49 is encased by a shield 78 supported on the lower face of the bell crank 34. The shield is formed with lateral ears 79 thereon for guiding the upper edges of the paper strand 25 after discharge thereof from the trough in the guide plate 21.
Both the bell cranks 33 and 34 are formed with integral upwardly and outwardly directed arms 81 (Fig. 7), having openings in the outer ends thereof for the reception of diametrically reduced threaded end portions of bolts 82. The bolts are threaded in the upper frame cross member and secured to the arms 81 by nuts 83 on the reduced ends of the bolt. Adjustment of the bolts 82 facilitates the rocking movement of the bell cranks about their fulcrums on the rod 18, in order to align the belt in parallel relation with the upper ends of the rollers 31. The frame upper cross member is further provided with a pair of brackets 85 for the support of a sheave wheel 86 engaged with the belt 49. The bracket is slidably mounted on the frame cross member to vary the tension of the belt and is locked in place by screws 84.
As illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5, the bowl 10 may be readily attached or removed from the incinerator 13 through the provision of a pair of horizontal arms 87 aflixed to the bowl and formed with depending hooks 88 in the outer ends thereof engageable with pins 89 in spaced ears 90 secured to the face of the incinerator and the cover plate 65. The cover 11 is also mounted for ready assembly upon the bowl by engagement of the subtended flange 23 thereon with a plurality of upwardly directed spaced lugs 91 secured to the inner wall of the bowl '(Fig. 2). The frame 17 may be elevated and sustained in a horizontal position by a bar 92 when a new roll of paper 25 is mounted in the brackets 22.
The incinerator 13, shown in Figs. 2 and 5, comprises a prismoidal metal housing 93, lined with fire clay 94, and provided with a drawer 95 adjacent the base thereof. The drawer contains a shallow bowl 96 for the reception of the ash residue from the burntfolded strand of paper and the fecal material thereon, and a steel screen or grid 97 is mounted on the top of the bowl to support the material that may fall thereon during combustion. The combustion chamber of the incinerator is provided with a transversely disposed arcuate baffle plate 98 arranged in tangential relation with the shuttle 58 and rearward the nozzle on the fuel supply line so the flame therefrom will be directed against the paper strip as it is discharged from the shuttle. The base of, the bafiie plate 98 is spaced from the floor of the combustion chamber so the flame will be directed thereunder and over the face of the bowl 96. The incinerator, togetherv with the blower 99 and fuel control units 100 therefor (Fig. 2) are enclosed in a sheet metal housing 101 (Fig. 1). The housing is provided with a door 102 having louvers 103 in the base thereof, and a screen grid 104 is mounted in the top of the housing to afford ventilation of the assembly. The fuel is combined with air from the blower to form a vaporized mixture which is delivered through a nozzle 105 in the side wall of the incinerator 13. The fuel mixture is supplied with auxiliary air in requisite volume to support combustion by the louvers 103 (Fig. 1) in the base of the door 102. V
With the apparatus adjusted in its operative posltion,
as illustrated in Fig. l, the mechanism for conveying the folded strip of paper from the feed rollers to the incinerator comprises the engagement of the upper edge of'the folded paper with the belt 49, the engagement of the remaining portion of the strip with the faces of the rollers 31 and the consequent propulsion thereof while opening for folding a strand of paper from said roll into a U section for the retention of fecal matter, a pair of vertical rotative rollers at the'end of said trough engaged with said folded U section of paper and fecal matter, selectively actuatable means for rotating said rollers and pulling said U section of paper and fecal matter through it is supported in the shuttle 58 which is disposed with the open end thereof contiguous the discharge opening between the rolls 31. The movement of the shuttle is initiated by depression of the hand lever 41 (Fig. 3) which swings the arm 56 of the bell crank 54 rearwardly and advances the opposed open edge of the shuttle to a point within the incinerator. The depression of the lever simultaneously effects the transaxial movement of the door 62 as the lever 71 engages the cam face 73 which retracts the door 62 from the opening 58 in the shuttle and the opening 61 in the incinerator. The door is actuated inward by the spring 68 which holds the paper against the door jamb 63 until the door is retracted by the cam plate 72,. and the operative cycle of the door is repeated by further oscillative movement of. the lever 41. The return movement of the shuttle is effected by the spring 76. The structure of the shuttle and mode of operation thereof prevents untoward sagging or downward deflection of the looped paper strand during the movement thereof into the incinerator, and also eliminates the production of lateral tortuous folds in the paper and consequent wadding thereof in the throat of the incinerator.
The support of the roll of paper 25 on the base of the frame 17, and the position of the paper guide plate 21 relative thereto, not only prevents kinking and twisting of the paper strand as it is folded in the trough of the guide plate, but also accommodates the ready renewal of the paper roll when the frame is supported in an elevated position.
Although the foregoing description is necessarily of a detailed character, in order that the invention may be completely set forth, it is to be understood that the specific terminology is not intended to be restrictive or confining, and that various rearrangements of parts and modifications of detail may be resorted to without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as herein claimed.
What is claimed is: I
1. Apparatus for the combustion of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a guide plate extending into the opening in the closet adjacent said roll of paper, upturned side walls adjacent the rearward end of said plate defining a trough under and facing said opening for folding a strand of paper from said roll into a U section for the retention of fecal matter, a pair of vertical rotative rollers at the end of said trough engaged with said folded U section of paper and fecal matter, selectively actuatable means for rotating said rollers and pulling said U section of paper and fecal matter through said trough and flattening the fecal matter, an incinerator having an opening therein coaxially aligned with said trough, a reciprocative shuttle in said incinerator for conveying the said U section of paper and fecal matter into the incinerator, said shuttle having an aperture in the side walls thereof, a sliding door on said incinerator slidable transversely of said shuttle for closing the opening in said incinerator, an arm connected to said roller actuating means for moving said shuttle and the U section of paper and fecal matter into said incinerator, and means connected to said roller actuating means to move said door into and out of said aperture in said shuttle and impinge said U section of paper and fecal matter against the wall of the apparatus when the door is closed.
2. Apparatus for the combustion of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a guide plate extending into the opening in the closet adjacent said roll of paper, upturned side walls adjacent therearward end of said plate defining a trough under and facing said plate extending into the opening in the closet adjacent said said trough and flattening the fecal matter, an incinerator having an opening therein coaxially aligned with said trough, a reciprocative shuttle in said incinerator for the support of said U section of paper and fecal matter, said shuttle having an aperture in the side walls thereof, a sliding door on said incinerator slidable transversely of said shuttle for closing the opening in said incinerator, a lever connected to said roller actuating means, a cam on said lever for moving said shuttle and the U section of paper and fecal matter into said incinerator, and means connected to said lever for actuating said door into impinged relation with the U section of paper and fecal matter and the wall defining the opening in said incinerator, said aperture in said shuttle and a spring for the retraction of said shuttle from said opening in said incinerator.
3. Apparatus'for the combustion of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a guide roll of paper, upturned side walls adjacent the rearward end of said plate defining a trough under and facing said opening for folding a strand of paper from said roll into a U section for the retention of fecal matter, a pair of vertical rotative rollers at the end of said trough engaged with said folded U section of paper and fecal matter through said trough selectively actuatable means for rotating said rollers and pulling said U section of paper through said trough and flattening the fecal matter therein, an incinerator having an opening therein coaxially aligned with said trough, a lever pivoted on said incinerator, a cam on said lever, a reciprocative shuttle in said incinerator for the carrying of said U section of paper and fecal matter into the incinerator, said shuttle having an aperture in the side walls thereof, a crank operable by said roller actuating means for reciprocating said shuttle, a sliding door on said incinerator slidable transverselyv of said shuttle, an arm on said roller actuating means engaged with said cam for moving the door across the opening in said incinerator, and a shoulder in .said cam for the unidirectional movement of said arm.
4. Apparatus for the combustion of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a guide plate extending into the opening in the closet adjacent said roll of paper, upturned side walls adjacent the rearward end of said plate defining a trough disposed under and facing said opening for the reception of fecal matter and for folding a strand of paper from said roll into a U section, a pair of vertical rotative rollers at the end of said trough engaged with said folded U section of paper and fecal matter, selectively actuatable means for rotating said rollers and pulling said U section of paper through said trough and flattening the fecal matter therein, an incinerator having an opening in a side wall thereof coaxially aligned with said trough, a reciprocative U shaped shuttle in said incinerator aligned with the opening in the incinerator for the support of said folded section of paper and fecal matter, said shuttle having an aperture in the side walls thereof, a sliding door on said incinerator slidable transversely of said aperture in said shuttle for closing the opening in said incinerator, means operated by said roller actuating means for moving said shuttle into and out of said incinerator, and means operated by said roller actuating means for moving said door into and out of said aperture in said shuttle.
5. Apparatus for the consumption of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a
roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a plate 7 extending into. the opening in said closet adjacent said roll for guiding said paper, upturned side walls adjacent the opposed end of said plate defining a trough under and facing said opening for folding said paper into a channel section for the reception of fecal matter, a pair of vertical rollers at the end of said trough engaged with said channel section of paper and fecal matter, means selectively actuatable for rotating said rollers and pulling said folded channel section of paper through said trough and flattening the fecal matter, an incinerator having an opening therein aligned with said trough, a reciprocative shuttle of channel section in said incinerator aligned with the opening in the incinerator for the support of said paper channel section and fecal matter, said shuttle having an aperture in the side thereof, a reciprocating sliding door on said incinerator slidable transversely and disposed in normal relation to said shuttle for successively opening and closing the opening in said incinerator, an arm connected to said roller actuating means for moving said shuttle, means connected to said roller actuating means for moving said door into and out of said aperture in said shuttle and hooks protruding from the rear of said closet engaged with said incinerator to facilitate the ready removal of the incinerator from the closet.
6. Apparatus for the consumption of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a plate extending into the opening in the closet adjacent the end thereof opposite said roll for guiding said paper, upturned side walls adjacent the end of said plate defining a trough under and facing said opening for folding said paper into a channel section for the reception of fecal matter, a pair of vertical rollers at the end of said trough engaged with said channel section of paper and fecal matter for flattening the fecal matter, means selectively actuatable for rotating said rollers and pulling said folded channel section of paper and fecal matter through said trough, an incinerator having an opening therein aligned with said trough, a reciprocative shuttle in said incinerator aligned with the opening in the incinerator for the support of said paper channel section and fecal matter a lever pivotally mounted on said closet and engaged with said shuttle for the actuation thereof, said shuttle having an aperture in the side thereof, a sliding door on said incinerator slidable transversely and disposed in normal relation to said shuttle for closing the opening in said incinerator, a second arm pivoted on said incinerator and connected to said door, a cam thereon comprising a looped plate, an inclined edge on one side thereof, a rearwardly disposed section on the upper end thereof, an arm on said roller actuating means engaged with said cam for rocking said second named lever, a spring on said incinerator urging said door into said aperture in said shuttle, said arm being movable in an arcuate path normal to said cam, whereby the arm will escape said rearwardly directed portion of the cam as it swings upwardly thereover.
7. Apparatus for the combustion of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a plate extending into the opening in the closet adjacent said roll for guiding said paper, upturned side walls adjacent the opposed end of said plate defining a trough under and facing said opening for folding said paper into a channel section for the reception of fecal matter, a pair of vertical rollers at the end of said trough engaged with said channel section of paper and fecal matter for flattening the fecal matter, means selectively actuatable for rotating said rollers and pulling said folded channel section of paper through said trough, an incinerator having an opening therein aligned with said trough, a vertical arcuate baffle plate in said incinerator disposed in spaced relation with the base of the incinerator, a reciprocative shuttle in said incinerator aligned with the opening therein for the support of said paper channel section and fecal a sliding door on said incinerator slidable transversely and disposed in normal relation to said shuttle for closing the opening in said incinerator, an arm connected to'sald' roller actuating means for reciprocating said shuttle, means connected to said roller actuating means for reciprocating said door into and out of said aperture in said shuttle, and a bowl in the base of said incinerator subjacent said bafiie plate for the reception of ashes falling from the burnt paper and fecal matter.
8. Apparatus for the combustion of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a plate extending into the opening in the closet adjacent said roll for guiding said paper, upturned side walls adjacent the opposed end of said plate defining a trough under and facing said opening for folding said paper into a channel section for the reception of fecal matter, a pair of vertical rollers at the end of said trough engaged with said channel section of paper and fecal matter, means selectively actuatahle for rotating said rollers and pulling said folded channel section of paper through saidtrough and simultaneously flattening the fecal matter, an incinerator having an opening therein aligned with said trough, a transversely disposed vertical baflle in said incinerator spaced from the base thereof, a fuel nozzle in said incinerator on one side of said baffle, a reciprocative shuttle in said incinerator aligned with the opening in the incinerator for the support of said paper channel section and fecal matter, said shuttle having an aperture in the side thereof, a sliding door on said incinerator slidable transversely and disposed in normal relation to said shuttle for closing the opening in said incinerator, a pivotal arm on said closet operatively connected to said roller actuating means for reciprocating said shuttle, a second arm pivoted on said incinerator and operatively connected to said roller actuating means and to said door for reciprocating the door into and out of said aperture in said shuttle, said fuel nozzle being disposed on the same side of said baffle as said shuttle.
9. Apparatus for the consumption of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof,'a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a plate extending into the opening in the closet adjacent said roll for the support of said paper, upturned side walls adjacent the opposed end of said plate defining a trough under and facing said opening for folding said paper into a channel section for the reception of fecal matter, a pair, of vertical rollers at the end of said trough engaged with said channel section of paper and fecal matter, means selectively actuatable for rotating said rollers and pulling said paper over said plate and through said trough and simultaneously flattening the fecal matter, an incinerator having an opening therein aligned with said trough, a reciprocative shuttle in said incinerator aligned with the opening in the incinerator for supporting and carrying said paper channel section and fecal matter into said incinerator, said shuttle having an aperture in the side thereof, a sliding door on said incinerator slidable transversely and disposed in normal relation to said shuttle for closing the opening in said incinerator, an arm connected to said roller actuating means for reciprocating said shuttle, and means connected to said roller actuating means for reciprocating said door into and out of said aperture in said shuttle, said last named means comprising a solenoid operatively connected to said door.
